Since the days of early settlers, Seattle has been a thriving center for Old Time Music on the West Coast. The popularity of this music has waxed and waned many times over the decades, and a new surge in interest has hit the Northwest in recent years. Old Time Music is often associated with the music played by the settlers of the Appalachian Mountains in the Southeast United States, recordings of which became popularized by early radio in the 1920's. However, it is also true that regional music styles, influenced by the vast diversity of immigrants and their contact with native peoples, developed across communities that were settled in the 1800's. Here in the Northwest, it's documented that wedding celebrations including fiddle music and traditional contra dancing happened near Seattle as early as 1862! Though this music is old as the hills, it's vibrant energy and rhythmic drive inspires musicians, dancers, & listeners of all ages and walks of life. Many will share my sentiment that this music is best enjoyed via participation, and old time musicians love to share, so come kick up your heels at a square dance, or bring your instrument out to a jam session! There's tons of folks in Seattle having a blast with this music, and we invite you to join us! Enjoy exploring this site, and please let me know if you have any questions.
